Choose the leadership model that fits the need

Not every business needs another permanent executive. Sometimes a business needs experienced executive leadership for a defined period; sometimes it needs that experience over a longer period without a permanent appointment.

I work alongside the leadership team, bringing experience from multiple businesses while taking the time to understand the particular circumstances of yours.

Start by stepping back

I don't arrive assuming I already know the answer.

Knowing the answer before speaking to the people in the business can look like confidence. More often, it demonstrates recklessness — or an intention to apply a standard approach.

The first task is to understand the organisation: its strategy, people, history, constraints and the context behind the problem.

Experience is useful only when it is applied to the circumstances of the business in front of you.

Challenge without taking over

An external executive is there to advise and lead for a defined purpose.

That means having a duty to push back when the leadership team is not making what you believe to be the optimal decision. It also means recognising that the final decision belongs to the executive team.

The relationship therefore needs both independence and trust.

Credibility is built through hundreds of small interactions, each building on the previous one.

Your context matters

The Board and executive leadership team hold organisational context that cannot be learned from a document or a few meetings.

I rely on that context. I listen to the people closest to the problem and use their knowledge alongside my own experience.

The objective is not to arrive with a predetermined solution. It is to bring a broader range of experience to the decision that needs to be made.

Value throughout the engagement

An external executive needs to demonstrate value continuously.

That means drawing on experience from different organisations, recognising patterns quickly and creating bespoke solutions rather than generic recommendations.

The business is not paying for a methodology. It is gaining access to experience it may not need every day, but can benefit from immediately.

The principle

An external executive should never forget that they are there to advise and lead for a defined purpose. Whether the engagement lasts months or years, they should be loyal to the organisation and work to ensure that the leadership team is successful.
