01 · THE BOARDROOM
When the big decisions need experienced judgement.
An experienced voice alongside the CEO, Chair or board — helping test strategy, challenge assumptions, understand consequences and ensure that important decisions can actually be executed.
Experience changes the conversation
Boards do not need another executive to run technology. They need people who can help them make better decisions. My role is to bring practical experience to the point where strategy, technology, people, operating models, transactions and execution meet.
I am most useful when the answer is not obvious: when a strategic ambition needs testing, an investment needs challenging, a transaction has consequences beyond the deal itself, or a transformation carries risks that are difficult to see from the board paper alone.
What I bring into the room
- Challenge whether strategy can actually be executed.
- Test technology, data and AI investment against business value, risk and consequences.
- Bring first-hand experience of M&A, divestment, carve-out and integration.
- Recognise when a stated technology problem is really a process, operating-model or organisational problem.
- Bring calm, practical perspective to transformation and programme risk.
- Act as a constructive critical friend to management.
How the relationship works
This is not a substitute for executive accountability. The board and executive team retain ownership of the business and its decisions. I bring independence, experience and challenge alongside that accountability.
Depending on the situation, that can mean a continuing fractional role, focused advisory support around a specific issue, or involvement through a period of strategic change.
